What You Put ON Your Body Is Just As Important As What You Put IN!
Safe skin care has take the paleo community by storm. I credit this to the booming Beauty Counter biz. While I personally don’t use their products, I love the message they spread!
I’ll admit, my beauty care products were the last to change. I hand’t given it much thought. But when I began to read about hormone balancing and how environmental factors have such a HUGE impact on your hormones I began to care. Endocrine disruptors. Toxins that change the way our hormones work or communicate. Causing problems from infertility, endometriosis to cancer. Yup. And it’s legal to put those toxins in products we literally SLATHER all over our bodies. Thanks government, way to look out for us. Ok, ok, I’ll leave my conspiracy theories at the door.
Few things before I tell you what products I use….
- I keep it fairly simple, I’m low maintenance, so I don’t have recommendations for all products under the sun (i.e. liquid eyeliner)
- I am NOT affiliated with any of the brands. These products I have used, loved and continue to use. No on pays me, nor do I sell them.
- While my autoimmune disease is skin related, and the soap I use on my body is a big deal to me, I have never had acne on my face. I’m sure the powers that be decided to cut this girl some slack. So yeah, my skin (on my face) has always been pretty good. It can get dry in some places and I get the PMS pimple every month, but that’s it.
- Do your own research! Always be your own advocate… this website it great, you can check how safe a lot of beauty products are: http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
Scrub a Dub Dub
I use ClariSea Skintox Activated Charcoal Salt Bar. I tried the Beauty Counter Charcoal bar and it really dried out my face, it also caused my HS areas to get agitated. I like the salt bar because the ingredients are really clean, and it leaves my skin feeling really supple. It’s also really affordable, at $11 a bar, which is pretty big and lasts 6 weeks +.
The ingredients are: Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, Organic & Sustainable Palm Oil, Water, Sodium Hydroxide, Activated Bamboo Charcoal Powder, Sodium Chloride (Sea Salt), Sodium Chloride (Mineral Salt)
They also have a salt scrub and a face mask. Both come in bottles and are DRY. You add water/soap to them. I like this because I can make the mask and exfoliating scrub asthin/thick as I want and I can use the charcoal soap as the base. Again, really clean ingredients. I don’t use these all the time though, like I said, I’m pretty low maintenance. Usually I but them out during that time of the month when I get my honorary PMS pimple. I do like that this mask doesn’t get super tight on my face, and again is gentle.
So I use Head and Shoulders sometimes… I know! But it’s not that bad, it has like a 3 rating on the EWG and ZERO endocrine disruptors. I have a dry scalp, what can I say. I used to use JASON Tea Tree Oil Shampoo… but their EWG ratings are no good. Womp Womp. I will keep searching for another alternative.
I think going natural with deodorant is hard for folks. I mean, no one wants to get in to an embarrassing BO situation. I can’t guarantee what works for me, will work for you. I do think it varies per person. Also what you have going on. I know that during my cycle… I have to be more on top of my stank. Also if I’m doing any kind of detoxing. When I first when low carb…. oh boy! It was bad and I had to wash and reapply deodorant a few times a day.
That being said… noooooo way I would EVER go back to antiperspirants or conventional deodorants. There are worse things than smelling bad. Like breast caner. As my skin condition (HS) also affected my under arms I became very weary of my deodorant choices early on. For a while I used TOM’s… it didn’t really work for me. Then I got Kiss My Face Liquid Rock... which I still use occasionally. They sell it at my grocery store and it’s very affordable. It has a 1 EWG rating (the best rating) and it works. I do have to re-apply through out the day.
Another deodorant I like it FATCO Women’s Lavender Stank Stop. When I fist saw the TINY little tub I thought I got ripped off. But dude, that little tub lasts FOREVER. You really only need a TINY amount and your rub it in to your armpits. It smells great. The ingredients are literally edible… and not going to lie… I also put that stuff on my occasional pimple and it zapped it over night. I think it’s the zinc and beef tallow. Anyway… GOOD STUFF. You can buy it from Barefoot Provisions if you want to save money on shipping and get some food or other items while you’re at it.
Ingredient list: Coconut Oil*, Arrowroot Powder*, Shea Butter*, Tallow from Organic Grass-fed Cows, Baking Soda, Non-Nano Zinc Oxide, Beeswax, Lavender Essential Oil, Clary Sage Essential oil. *Denotes An Organic Ingredient.
Without sounding like a paleo meme… COCONUT OIL. From head to toe. Everyday. I just grab a little jar, siphon some off from my kitchen supply and take it upstairs to my room. Boom.
Sometimes I add a few drops of Tea Tree Oil to it. I especially like doing this for areas that are known to break out, after shaving or if I have any kind of irritation going on. I shower and oil up at night. I would not recommend doing this in the morning because it takes a while to absorb into your skin and you don’t want to grease up your clothes.
For on the go moisture I use FAT STICK , another gem from FATCO. Literally a stick of fat that is like a giant chapstick. I carry it in my purse and rub some one whenever, wherever I need a little loving.
A few of you might remember a while back I got some Araza Beauty samples and posted on Instagram about it. Well let me tell you, I have been HOOKED. Those TINY samples not only lasted me forever, but my skin LOVED them. While the colors are limited, they are lovely. The ingredients are so clean you can EAT it! I tried their tea tree concealer, coconut foundation, sunshine bronzer, setting powder, eye colors, and lip glosses. LOVED IT ALL.
I have a concealer, setting powder, bronzer from Emani, vegan cosmetics, that I bought at Whole Foods. I also got a Mineral Fusion Mascara. While I like how they preform, I feel like they make me a little itchy. I’ve had itchy eyes because of allergies anyway, but I feel like it’s worse when I use this stuff. Not sure why. Maybe it’s in my head?
That’s all folks! If I ever find other things I like I will be sure to share. Instagram Stories is where I usually talk about this kind of stuff so make sure you watch my shenanigans.
